Our stainless-steel spades, forks and shovels come in two styles: one with
tubular steel handles with a molded plastic cover, and the other with kiln-dried
ash handles. In general, the wooden-handled tools – which are lighter
and shorter – are best suited to people of average height. If you
are tall and do a lot of heavy work, or tend to leave your tools out in
the rain (or snow!), the steel handle would be a better choice.
Regarding the heads, the beauty of stainless steel is that it is durable
and scours well because it is non-rusting. We guarantee these tools fully
and will replace any that fail you in use.
The smaller border spade and fork are suited to digging in and around
borders, transplanting perennials, mixing in soil amendments, and digging
in close quarters. The digging spade and fork are ideal for all heavy
digging jobs, double digging, ground preparation and harvesting. We offer
both sizes individually or as matched pairs (one spade and one fork). All
spades have treads to protect your footwear and make life easy for your
arches.
The border shovel is particularly useful for close work where you
do not need the depth of blade of our transplant spade (described below).
It is a boon for smaller gardeners.
We have taken the best features of a rabbiting spade and a trenching spade
to make this highly versatile transplant spade. It is ideal for working
in a confined area. Most standard spades are far too wide for precise work
in a flower garden. They cause damage to surrounding plants and do not capture
a decent depth of root structure when transplanting. This transplant spade
is ideally sized for those jobs. |

| Apart from varying in type and strength of materials, our lines also differ
in length and weight, so you should be able to find a tool that works well
for you. All meet the British standard for strength and quality, which means
for the digging tools you can apply 121 lb of force at the
end of the handle and be confident it will not break. However, they are
not designed to be indestructible, so we do not recommend them for uprooting
saplings or removing boulders. Overall lengths, head sizes, weights and
strength ratings are shown in the chart below.
