A. This has everything we look for in a cold frame. Made from 3/4" thick Eastern white cedar, it is built for long-term exposure to the elements. The side panels are constructed with tongue-and- groove joints; all other connections are fastened with exterior-grade screws.
To maximize sun exposure, there are window panes on the top as well as the front, all made of 8mm thick corrugated polycarbonate with a double-walled construction that makes it strong, lightweight and insulated to resist frost and condensation.
The bifold top has retaining pins that travel in guide channels, so it opens and closes smoothly but cannot blow open in the wind. Two position stops let you choose the opening width, and the pins can be easily disengaged, allowing the top to swing open fully when needed.
Supplied as pre-built, flat-packed panels, the cold frame requires minor assembly (driver bit and screws included). Completed structure is
48" x 50"; height is 15" at the front, 19" at the back.
Made in USA.
B. To prevent overheating on sunny days, an adjustable, heat-activated venting mechanism is available separately (instructions and mounting hardware supplied). When the interior reaches a pre-set temperature, a gas-charged cylinder automatically opens the top panels to let cool air in.
The higher the temperature, the wider the panels open (up to approx.
4" of travel); when the interior cools down again, the mechanism retracts, closing the panels. The cold frame can also be opened manually without altering mechanism settings.
Venting mechanism is made in Denmark.
