1989/90 Catalog Cover   1989/90 Woodworking Customer Letter

Print Catalog Cover

Dear Customer,

The customer letter is always one of the last things to be done in a catalogue. After selection, writing, typesetting, laying out, photography, proofing, re-writing and re-photographing, what we all want to do by late August is go into another business or go on permanent vacation. Instead, we gird our loins and stride manfully (personfully?) into preparation of various special mailings, the Christmas catalogue, etc.

In the midst of this gear change, I try to come up with an upbeat letter that pretends all is well and that we at Lee Valley are truly in control of our destiny. Well, you've bought it before, so I guess I can try it again.

We have so many new products this year that, rather than attempt to list them, we have put blue dots (like this ) beside their descriptions. In some instances, the new product is just a new size of an old product. In others, such as the Stone Pond on page 206, it is a major new product of our own invention that we will be selling world-wide.

Of the various new products, the hands-down winner (for nostalgic reasons) is the antique banding shown on the cover. Our catalogue cover is essentially a miniature of a 25" x 38" poster which shows the banding full size. The poster (which we offer on the opposite page for $6.95) will quickly become a collector's item, just as the banding already is. We were delighted to uncover this unique stock since it opens up all sorts of design possibilities for turners and cabinetmakers. Except for this stock, banding which incorporates vegetable ivory, pewter and Cuban mahogany is unheard of today. I look forward to using some of it myself.

All of this positive talk is so uplifting that I feel nearly ready to tackle another mailing…

Yours Sincerely,

Leonard G. Lee
President
