| Dear Customer,
It has not been a good year in the tool business. A number of
old, established European tool manufacturers went out of business
and an equal number fell into the hands of financial sleight-of-hand
artists. The loss of good tools was immediate in the first case
and will be more gradual but equally inevitable in the latter.
In Canada, two major hardware chains went bankrupt. All of this
reduces the range of choice for buyers.
On the positive side, small and innovative tool manufacturers
continue to show up on the market. Most of these are in North
America. But the manufacturing of woodworking tools is shifting
from Western Europe to the rest of the world. Only time will tell
if the skill transfer is as great as the production transfer.
The strength of the Canadian dollar also had its effect this
year. Although the stronger dollar has done nothing for Canadian
employment, it has allowed us to reduce the price of over 800
items in this catalogue.
Naturally, when you now to go check the new price of that tool
that you have finally decided you cannot live without, it will
have gone up. But that is Sod's law at work, not our pricing policy.
