   What Is It?

It is difficult to tell exactly when this rope-measuring device was manufactured, though the design would suggest some time in the early- to mid-1900s.

A measurement is taken by drawing a length of rope through the pulley system behind the faceplate. A central wheel is turned as the rope is pulled through, which works a set of gears attached to a dial. The faceplate is marked off in feet.
