Do you like to cut joints?
Big joints?
Small joints?
Tenons and dovetails?
Finger joints?
Well
have we got the saw for you! With the new Veritas Variable
Gang Saw (2009), you'll cut a variety of joints like you never have before!
Using the same evolutionary technology as the Veritas Dovetail Saw, first
released in November of 2008, the Veritas Variable Gang Saw (2009) sets
an entirely new standard for productivity and accuracy in hand joinery.
Made with the same high-quality blades and specially engineered stainless-steel
composite spine, it will cut dovetail joints not just 10% faster, not
just twice as fast, but a full three times faster!
It's un-believable!
But wait a minute, Lee Valley, you ask - just how is this possible? We
understand perfectly your skepticism, so pay close attention to the following
explanation.
The key to the Veritas Variable Gang Saw (2009) is the dual-rod rotating-axis
assembly. With four discrete positions, it not only reflects a given angle
setting (from 0-30°) through each of the four configurations necessary
for air-tight dovetails - it also keeps the saw teeth of multiple blades
in the same plane, and the tips of each blade positioned with no loss
of useable cut length!
Since the plane of the axis rods is at 45° to the plane of each saw
blade, one rotation of the axis assembly produces a reflected translation
of the set angle in a perpendicular plane, while two rotations generates
the complement. So with four rotations, you get both pin configurations,
and both tail configurations! It's just six easy steps to take four ordinary
boards, to a completed dovetail drawer!

Isn't it a-mazing!
Study carefully the illustrations that follow, to understand how it works:
Step 1
Set the desired saw spacing by backing off the axis locking screws
on each saw hub, and sliding the assembly to the desired position.
Lock each assembly in place, fixing the rotational axis pivot points
within the hub. |
Step 2
Loosen the brass knob on each axis handle, and set the desired dovetail
angle by skewing the axis handles. Note that the two axis handles
now form the short side of a parallelogram, and the two axis rods
form the long sides! Tighten the brass knobs on the axis handles to
lock in your dovetail angle. |
Step 3
Make your first tail cut.
Step 4
Unlock the pivot assembly knobs on each saw, grasp both axis handles
and rotate them 90° forward, and re-lock the pivot assembly knobs
- you are now set to make your first pin cut. |
Step 5
Unlock the pivot assembly knobs on each saw, grasp both axis handles
and rotate them 90° forward, and re-lock the pivot assembly knobs
- you are now set to make your second tail cut. |
Step 6
Unlock the pivot assembly knobs on each saw, grasp both axis handles
and rotate them 90° forward, and re-lock the pivot assembly knobs
- you are now set to make your second pin cut. |
It just doesn't get any easier than that! And you can gang multiple tail
boards for even more efficiency!
Isn't it beautiful? |

Here's what the woodworking world has had to say about the Veritas Variable
Gang Saw (2009): |

"Since the VVGS (2009) has
been in my shop, my tails have never been canted the wrong way
"
Jim S., Ontario |
"It's a bonza saw that makes
up for the longer sawing times on the tough domestic hardwoods up
(down) here
" D.Cohen, Australia |
"I especially like the handle
"
A. L. F., Cornwall, UK |
"Never have my wine cabinets
had so many finely cut joints
" H. Sakman, British
Columbia |
"Thank you Veritas
.
thank you!" C. Schwarz, Ohio |

Best of all - all kerf spacings and angles are completely and perfectly
preserved by the Veritas Variable Gang Saw (2009). It's just not possible
to cut the wrong angle, as the two outer blades act as out-riggers for the
central blade - the same way training wheels hold a bicycle in the correct
orientation! Instead of "measure twice, cut once", your new workshop
mantra can be "measure once - cut three times"; an incredible
difference of six times faster! |
It's un-believable! |
