Carrots Love TomatoesRoses Love Garlic - Gardening
by Louise Riotte

Both of these books have become standard references for companion planting. Companion planting is the process of planting compatible plants together to encourage growth and repel destructive insects.

Some plants have odors that act as a mask to insects, confusing the insects or drawing them away from susceptible hosts. That's one of the reasons why mixed plantings give better insect control than a monoculture. Other plants change the nutrient values in the soil. Very deep-rooted plants pull up minerals for shallow-rooted plants, and legumes fix nitrogen for other plants to use too.

Carrots Love Tomatoes (220 pages) focuses mostly on what to plant beside what in your fruit and vegetable gardens, while Roses Love Garlic (250 pages) is about companion planting in your ornamental gardens. Both books are softcover, 6" x 9", and revised in 1998. Interesting reading.

The Roses Love Garlic Book is no longer available.
