Gränsfors Axes from Sweden - Gardening
Gränsfors Axes from Sweden - Gardening
Hand made by professional smiths in a small factory in Sweden, Gränsfors axes are a pleasure to use. They have grace, heft and balance that reflect good design and craftsmanship. All are beautifully hand forged and come complete with oiled hickory handles and grain leather sheaths. They are fully honed, ready for use, and come marked with the smith's initials*.

These are special-purpose axes. If you want a utility axe, please buy one from your local hardware or chain store. These are not for chopping roots.

As these axes are hand made, the weights and measurements given below may vary slightly.

A. Hatchet
The hatchet has a 3" face, a 1 lb head, and a 13-1/2" handle. The shape is classic with rounded lugs, sharply nipped shoulders and a slim blade section.

B. Swedish Carving Axe
The carving axe, with its design based on traditional Swedish carving techniques, is good for roughing large carvings and architectural work. It has a 4-1/2" single-bevel face, a 14-1/2" long handle and a 2 lb head.

C. Small Carpenter's Axe
The small carpenter's axe has a 17-1/2" handle and is well suited for work in dry wood. Offering incredible balance and control, it has a 3-1/2" face and a 1-1/2 lb head.

D. Broad Axe
The broad axe is the Swedish double-bevel style with a 7" face, a 3 lb head and a 19-1/2" handle. It is easier to use than a single-bevel axe for fine work, but basically requires a different technique.

E. Forest Axe
The traditional forest axe is perfect for limbing felled trees. Designed mainly for green wood, it has a thin 3-1/2" face, a 25-1/4" handle and a 2 lb head.

F. Throwing Axe
The throwing axe is made to competition standards for weight, balance and size. Supplied with throwing instructions and complete rules, the axe has 6" faces, a 29" handle and weighs 3 lb, including the handle.

G. Splitting Maul
The splitting maul is designed for splitting sizeable chunks of wood. The head, at 5-1/2 lb, is heavier compared to the splitting axes, and has a 2-1/2" face. The large poll is for use on a splitting wedge. The handle is 31-1/4".

H. & J. Splitting Axes
Forged with concave, wedge-shaped heads designed for splitting, the splitting axes have steel collars to reduce damage from overstrikes. The small axe, with a 2 lb head, a 2-1/2" face, and a 23-1/2" handle, can be managed with one hand. The large axe has a 3" face, a 3-1/2 lb head, and a 27-1/4" handle.

K. Small Forest Axe
The small forest axe is practical for splitting small sticks for the fire or cutting small-diameter limbwood for starter fuel in a fireplace. It has a 3-1/4" face, a 1-1/2 lb head, and a 19-1/2" handle.

L. Mini Hatchet
With a 2-1/2" face and a 10-1/2" handle, the mini hatchet weighs just 13 oz overall. A terrific camp axe, it is well suited to chopping and splitting kindling.

M. Hunter's Axe
The hunter's axe, with a gently rounded and polished flay poll, is specially made for skinning game. Also suitable for chopping wood, it has a 3-1/4" face, a 1-1/2 lb head, and an 18-3/4" handle.

N. Splitting Wedge
The forged steel splitting wedge has a slight spiral to lever the wood apart. It has a 1-3/4" face and weighs 4 lb.

O. Mortise Axe
The mortise axe has a 2-1/4" chisel-like bit for removing waste from mortises in rail fence construction or log building. It weighs about 2-1/2 lb with a 19-1/2" long handle.

Each Gränsfors axe is supplied with an informative booklet outlining proper usage, cutting techniques and care instructions.

* The smiths' names are: Lennart Petterson, Kjell-Åke Sjölund, Mattias Mattson, Ulrik Nilsson, Mikael Sundberg, Rune Andersson, Anders Magnusson, Anders Strömstedt, Daniel Gräntz, Mattias Blixt-Pettersson, Paul James Alford and Tobias Thelin.

The Mortise Axe is not stocked at our retail stores but can be ordered for pick-up.
