This is a full-scale reproduction of the original Welsh miner's lamp, which has been manufactured in Wales virtually unchanged since 1815 when Sir Humphry Davy invented it.
Made in Wales by the sons and daughters of Welsh miners, this lamp is intended for domestic use. It differs from the original both in price and in not having the flash-arresting baffling, which was a safety requirement for preventing explosions in the coal-dust-laden air of underground mines.
Fuelled with either lamp oil or kerosene, it produces a warm yellow light that gives a cheerful ambiance to a porch, deck or patio and is bright enough to illuminate a hand of hearts or rummy.
Made largely from brass, the lamp is handsome and aesthetically accurate, and functions well out of doors, all at one third the cost of the underground version.
9" tall without the hook. Includes funnel.
