We have supplemented our popular line of stainless-steel ergonomic digging
tools (see items PG101 through PG111) with these lightweight and taller
To increase the length while reducing weight, the shafts are made of durable
fiberglass. The heads are carbon-steel with a clear epoxy coating to resist
rust, and are joined to the shafts with hardwood wedges for strength.
The tools are strong enough to bear 120 lb of force at the end of the
handle without breakage.
The line includes the larger digging spade, a digging fork, a transplant
spade and a shovel (for digging or moving material). Like the stainless-steel
digging tools, they have large circular handles to permit a range of natural
hand positions to avoid wrist strain, and oversize shovel steps for secure,
comfortable foot placement.
The steps (found on the spades and the shovel) are larger, higher set and
offset slightly from the shaft, to provide a wider surface with better foot
registration than traditional steps.
The steps are also folded forward and
slightly curved (traditional steps fold backward, toward the user, and are
straight), which softens the corner to reduce ankle injuries. Last, the
angle of the step is slightly greater than the traditional 90° relative
to the blade, providing a better push angle for the tool.
