Saturday, February 16, 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Hand planes are one of the most useful tools in woodworkers' kits. In this course, the use of both bench and specialty planes will be demonstrated. Which plane is most useful for a particular task and material, basic sharpening, setting, adjusting, and fettling planes for optimal results will also be covered. Steven Der-Garabedian has been woodworking since the early 1990s and runs Black Walnut Studio, a fine furniture workshop in Mississauga, Ontario. He started with self-taught woodworking skills and eventually completed his formal training at Rosewood Studio, where he studied under several masters of the industry. While at Rosewood, Steve was bitten by the teaching bug and continues to teach through the Lee Valley seminar program, at his own shop and at various other workshops in and around the Greater Toronto Area. He teaches a practical style of woodworking where the initial rough work is done with power tools and then the piece is refined with hand tools. Steve is a contributing writer for Canadian Woodworking and Home Improvement Magazine and when time permits, he continues to design and build one-of-a-kind furniture via commission. You can contact Steve, visit his blog and see some of his work at blackwalnutstudio.ca.
