Understanding Wood
Friday, March 23, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Peter Barkham will help you understand how trees produce wood, how we produce lumber from trees and how to choose suitable wood for projects. The main emphasis will be on practical information you can apply when designing and making wooden pieces that last. You will examine the fine structure of various species under the microscope, look at wood movement, moisture content, veneer and lamination, do some simple experiments with beams, and then apply these concepts to joinery and selecting wood for your projects. A variety of samples will be on hand to examine. All tools and materials provided.
Fee: $40.00

Peter Barkham believes he inherited woodworking genes from his great-grandfather, an English cabinetmaker. He opened a workshop in 1979 and has since produced furniture, cabinets, display pieces and a variety of wooden oddments. Now semi-retired, he works from his home workshop on a lifetime's accumulation of hardwoods. His two main sources of inspiration continue to be James Krenov and George Nakashima.
