Beginner Carving
Caricature Heads and Faces
       Thursday, April 12, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
and Friday, April 13, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Rick Wiebe will introduce you to the art of caricature face carving. Using gouges and knives, you will learn the cuts to make traditional caricatures and carved heads. This is a great workshop for people who love to whittle and would like to hone their skills. Wood choice, layout and tool choices will be covered. You will leave with a completed bust and a study stick so you can easily repeat the eight simple steps to face carving. All tools and materials provided.
Fee: $130.00

Rick Wiebe has been whittling and carving since the mid-1960s, and credits his father with getting him started. Although not a carver, his dad encouraged Rick to carry a pocketknife and know how to safely use it to make many of the items that people want and need. As a boy, Rick's first projects were toys such as canoes, boats, and peashooters. Over the years he has enjoyed the gamut of carving subjects, including wooden chains, waterfowl decoys, realistic wildlife, and rocking and carousel horses. He especially likes cowboy caricatures, as they reflect his love of the outdoors and the western lifestyle. He developed a unique technique of carving fan-feathered birds out of one piece of wood. Most recently he has taken up chainsaw carving and large log carvings. His carvings are in private collections in Canada, USA, Japan, Europe, Australia and South America. Rick is the author of Carving A Walking Stick With Personality, Learn To Whittle Fan-Feathered Birds and Adventures in Fan Carving. You can view his work at www.woodcarvingbiz.com.
