I
have been working in the gardening business for several
years now and lately there are two words I have been hearing
more frequently from customers: low maintenance. It seems
as though more gardeners are becoming interested in yards
that look beautiful and take care of themselves.
Since a beautiful, weed-free grass lawn can be one of
the most labor-intensive parts of a yard, it's no surprise
that the low-maintenance concept is extending into this
area. Grass lawns are expensive to water, fertilize and
treat with herbicides, not to mention the environmental
impact. For those who no longer wish to invest excessive
amounts of time and money maintaining their lawns every
year, there are alternatives. |

Maintaining
a weed-free lawn such as this one can be tedious and time
consuming for some homeowners. |
Gardens
The most obvious alternative is to create more gardens! Turn
your lawn into a beautiful herb, flower or vegetable patch.
I have even seen some lovely lawns composed of native wildflowers.
Unfortunately, this alternative does not give you, your children,
or your pets much space to run around. To solve this problem,
I would propose some attractive, hardy ground covers that could
be used instead of or in combination with your grass.
