What Is It?

Made of metal and usually equipped with a perpendicular wooden handle, the pickaxe is an agricultural and construction hand tool that was used for breaking up hard and rocky surfaces, particularly those too difficult to pierce with a spade. Prison chain gangs are popularly assumed to have used these for ditching.
