Before we had containers made from all sorts of modern materials, casks were used to hold various foodstuffs (among many other things).

These sugar augers, as they are known, were made from wrought iron. Each measures 16” in length. They were used to loosen hardened sugar or lift dried fruit contained in wooden barrels. To do so, the user simply pushed the auger into the center of the barrel and twisted.
