Tuning and Using Molding Planes

  • Make a trial cut, adjusting the set if needed. The shavings will get wider as you progress, so, while you can get away with a deep cut for the first few passes in softwood, you'll eventually need to set the blade properly.
  • Continue making passes; ensure the fence maintains contact with the work edge and the plane is sprung correctly. Take shavings along the full length, which is especially important for the final few passes to produce a clean molding.
I hope that these articles provide readers with an appreciation for these apparently simple tools. Hopefully, they will inspire you to incorporate hand-planed moldings into your next project.
