Modifications
Having both left- and right-handed conservators working in the
lab, we decided to modify the plans slightly to allow reversal
of the saw apparatus so that the device could be used by anyone,
regardless of handedness. A piano hinge was added between the
vice jaw and spring board in order to make it articulate, so
that it could accommodate thicker packets of veneer while maintaining
adequate clamping pressure around the area being sawn. The structure
can be almost completely disassembled and it can be infinitely
adjusted in order to ensure that the blade remains perpendicular
to the vise. The plans also allowed for customization according
to the operator's height. As mentioned earlier, we couldn't
resist adding a few ebony details and decorative joinery in
order to indulge our shared appreciation for the look of fine
furniture.

Acknowledgments
Many thanks to the Canadian Conservation Institute for their
support and funding of the project. I would also like to thank
my mentors, furniture conservators Alastair Fox and James Hay,
for their expertise, guidance and patience. Thank you to W.
Patrick Edwards at the American School of French Marquetry for
supplying the plans and hardware and also for sharing his broad
knowledge of marquetry tools and techniques.
