the relief cut as shown above, the author eliminated the need to remove a saw's handle before securing it in the vise.
used a rasp to smooth the curve and scrapers to clean it up
further. To complete it, I sanded the vise to 220 grit and applied a
coat of sealer (de-waxed shellac), followed by several coats of clear shellac.
the finish had dried overnight, I installed the now-completed
saw vise in the front vise of my workbench and pulled out my
saws. The vise held them in a rock-solid grip. A quick signature
at the base and a coat of wax, and I was done.
My shop-built vise is a synthesis of two designs and also incorporates
some of my own features. Now that it's done, I need to turn
some file handles and take this vise for a real test drive!
