What Is It?
In all truthfulness, this article started as a parody of the numerous what-is-it type of article that many hobby magazines publish these days. In the past, I have complained about a shortage of items that would truly mystify readers. Here, I have broken some new ground by creating a subcategory I shall call the "Why Is It?"

  What Is It?
First the back story on these objects. In the late 1980s and early 90s, an enterprising tool hound was scouring the older hardware stores of Philadelphia when he came upon one undergoing a transformation into a corner grocery. He asked about old tools and hardware, and the new owners suggested that there was much in the basement about to be sold off. In that stash, he found about 25 boxes filled with the fabled plane axes, such as the ones shown here. The tool hunter understood that the bigger the pile, the better the price, so he bought them all. The pile was then sold at numerous auctions. This writer, along with many other collectors, succumbed and bought a box identical to this one. I am now awaiting my chance to appear on Antiques Roadshow to be told that what I have is worth a zillion dollars.
