The substantial torsional forces created during hollowing can, at times, challenge even the most seasoned turners to produce smooth, controlled cuts. This hollowing rig relieves these forces by preventing rotary movement of the cutter, while allowing the user full control over lateral and depth adjustment; maneuvering the cutter for coarse or light work requires little effort and results in cuts that are both smoother and less susceptible to catches than with freehand hollowing.
The cutter holder allows variable cutter projection. Two sizes are available. The small rig, suitable for most smaller lathes* with up to a 16" swing, accepts both 1/2" and 5/8" shaft cutters (not included). The large rig fits most full-size lathes* with up to a 26" swing and accommodates cutters with 1/2", 5/8" and 3/4" shafts (not included). Well designed, these rigs greatly enhance the safety and speed of hollow-form work.
Essentially an adjustable arm mechanism fitted atop the hollowing rig, the laser guide eliminates need for constant wall thickness measurement during hollowing applications. Designed to suspend a laser pointer (ordered separately) above and relative to the cutter head, it provides a visual representation of the cutter position within the hollow form.
By setting the distance between the laser beam and cutter tip to match the desired wall thickness, you control the wall thickness by hollowing only until the laser beam touches the outer edge of the vessel, thereby indicating you've reached the correct thickness. The 4-3/4" long laser pointer projects a highly visible dot on the hollow form.
* These rigs attach to lathe beds with a clamp block. The small rig includes a nominal 2" x 4" clamp block; the block for the large rig is nominally 3" x 4". To ensure compatibility, please measure your bed gap before ordering.
