|In recent years, consumer focus on plane performance has changed, and not necessarily in a good way. All over the globe, woodworkers have become enchanted with just how thin a shaving they can produce while planing, not realizing how inefficient this has made woodworking. In fact, there is now less fine furniture being made than there was just a few short years ago. No wonder – it can take up to ten times longer to bring a surface to final dimension, when taking as little as a tenth of a thou per pass.|
The Veritas No-Fuss-Tool Shroud (NFTS) changes all of that. This revolutionary planing accessory not only makes planing faster, it ensures the cabinetmaker's focus remains directed solely towards the surface being produced, and not on the "quality" of the waste generated.
Conducted in close collaboration with the Schwarzwald H?lzernes Institut, our time and motion studies have shown that pre-NFTS planing practice consisted of four discrete work elements: push, pluck, preen, and position. We've dispensed with the usual "pluck and preen" stages; eliminating the risk of repetitive strain injuries from constantly releasing one's grip to pluck shavings (and the resultant uneven loading of the tote hand), as well as the frankly annoying preening over shavings that's become so prevalent among plane users.
Slump-formed using geothermal steam, the sustainably produced shroud is carefully crafted from select recycled composite material chosen for its clarity, and durability. Trimmed to exacting standards, and fitted with six rare-earth magnets, it slips snugly and securely over the plane throat, while allowing full access to all adjustment mechanisms. The shroud collar accepts a 27mm rotating connector for complete compatibility with all Festool CT-series dust (now shaving!) extractors. Combined with a boom arm, an NFTS-equipped plane not only planes faster, it leaves nothing to clean-up.
For ultimate convenience, you can augment the NFTS with an optional wireless trigger-finger tote that remotely activates the shaving extractor, saving even more effort.
The shroud and tote can be purchased separately to retrofit to an existing plane, or as a complete kit in a custom black and gold Veri-tainer. The complete kit includes the Veritas Low-Angle plane with wireless trigger-finger tote, the No-Fuss-Tool Shroud (NFTS), four Veritas blades (25°, 38°, 50°, and toothed).
Having perfected the NFTS, our engineers have now turned their focus to other applications of this exciting technology. Watch for our new lathe accessory, the Veritas "Shroud of Turnin", a truly miraculous advancement.
