Over the past several years, LED lights have increased in quality and brightness, while decreasing in cost – a trend that continues today. Much like the transistor, they have made their way into an array of consumer products. These magnetic sensor lights are excellent examples of an inexpensive solution to a common problem – automatically-switched lighting for small spaces or spot tasks. They make it simple to illuminate a door lock, light up a cupboard, or highlight a light switch after opening a door.
Both lights run on button cells and are shut off when a magnetic bar (about 1/4" square) moves close to the light case. Each has an additional manual on/off switch, is tape mounted, and is only about 5/16" thick. (Button cells are included and are easily replaced when necessary.)
The dual LED light is 1-7/8" long, 1" wide, slides into an adhesive mounted clip, and casts a beam of light roughly perpendicular to the case. Its magnetic sensor is on the same end of the light as the LED. The single LED light, 1-9/16" by 1-1/8", is mounted with an adhesive Velcro® strip, and casts a beam of light in line with the case. The sensor is on the opposite end of the case.
While they solve different problems, the single LED version has the widest range of applications and is sold in packages of three.
They are wonderful for illuminating a small area, for a short period of time, with a minimum of fuss or expense.
