Cast-Iron Legs

Cast-Iron Legs - Hardware
We designed these elegant cast-iron legs as a heavy, stable base for a workbench. Looking at historic examples of cast iron, we realized that we could make the base attractive as well as useful (that's where the Victorian look comes from) and the legs could be used for more than just workbench bases. Why not build drawers or shelves into the space above the stretchers? At 33" high (23" wide) why not use them for kitchen work islands? The design possibilities are nearly endless, but, at 117 lb per pair and held together with our truss-rod system, they also make a heavier and more rigid bench base than you can get on the most expensive European workbench.

The table legs, at 27" high (22" wide), are perfect for building both desks and tables. Again, there is no limit to the design possibilities. Even the stretcher can be square, round, oval or rectangular; straight or arched. Table legs weigh 60 lb per pair. You can leave the legs charcoal gray as they come, or you can add a light gray (as we did for the photo) to highlight the decorations in the casting, or you can paint them completely different colors, solid or contrasting. In the 1800s it was popular to pinstripe them as well. You can be as conservative or flamboyant as you wish.

The truss-rod stretcher system is particularly versatile. The stretchers can be as simple as a pair of 2 x 6's for a workbench or any number of graceful shapes for a table. You can hide the rod in open or closed rebates. The system completely prevents racking. No more wobbly tables. The bench legs come with two 48" long truss-rod assemblies (1/2" diameter steel), the table legs with one. Both include steel cap nuts and washers. Brass cap nuts and washers are available separately.

These legs come in a single-tone (charcoal gray) protective paint finish. Two tones shown in photo to highlight casting details.
