Recommended perennials
There are several perennials that require little, if any,
winter protection in containers.
- Yarrow (Achillea) is attractive in pots
and has a long blooming period. I like the more compact
pearl yarrow (Achillea ptarmica 'The Pearl'),
which is extremely cold resistant.
- Daisies will bloom through most of the summer. If
you want a large, showy bloom, the Shasta daisy (Chrysanthemum
x superbum) is ideal.
- Hostas have impressive foliage and
some species look lushly tropical. I always place
a ring of crushed oyster shells (you can easily improvise)
around the base of the plant to discourage slugs.
Hostas do equally well in partial shade or sun.
- Hydrangeas are a good choice
for cool, shady spots. They provide beautiful foliage
during the summer, and spectacular, huge blooms late
in the growing season. I trim them back in the fall.
- Daylilies (Hemerocallis) impressively cascade
over pot edges. The cheerful yellow blooms of the
Stella d'Oro daylily (Hemerocallis 'Stella
d'Oro') are profuse and last throughout the growing
season. The plant's compressed shape makes it ideal
for containers.
- Cinquefoil (Potentilla) is a sturdy, hardy
broadleaf shrub, which blooms all summer and survives
cold winters.
- Roses provide both color and fragrance to containers.
I've had particular success with the Morden Blush
rose (Rosa 'Morden Blush'), which survives
low temperatures - and even neglect - admirably.
- Pincushion flowers (Scabiosa caucasica) are
small and produce blooms all growing season. Deadheading
helps promote abundant blossoms.
- Stonecrop (Sedum) has succulent foliage and
produces massive blooms throughout the growing season.
It will flourish in light or partial shade. The flower
stalks can be left intact to provide an interesting
winter landscape.
