Beekeeping for Beginners

  Bees

Bee suppliers often sell honeybees, but you can also find reputable bee breeders in government listings, at bee club meetings, online or by calling beekeepers. There are several different honeybee breeds to choose from, with characteristics and availability that vary slightly. Do some research to determine which is right for you and your climate.

The best way to start is to buy a nucleus hive, or nuc. A nuc is a small colony of honeybees, generally consisting of a laying queen, one frame of honey, two frames of brood (baby bees) and one blank frame. Nucs are usually ready to pick up from the breeder in the spring. Once you get your nuc home, install it into your new beehive and in no time, the bees will be settled and busy at work.
