Growing Lilacs
 


S. x chinensis
An S. x chinensis bursting with lovely, pale-purple blooms.

Late or Himalayan lilac (S. villosa): blooms later than other lilacs; grows to a maximum of about 10'; produces fragrant clusters of rose-colored blossoms; pointed leaves have hairy veins.

Hungarian lilac (S. josikaea): resembles late lilac but has darker flowers and leaf veins are smooth, not hairy.

Early lilac (S. oblata): among the first to bloom in the spring; grows to about 12'; fragrant flowers; relatively big, broad leaves tinged with red when young and turn red in autumn.

Littleleaf lilac (S. microphylla): round, low, bush-like plant that seldom grows more than 5'; produces small, late-blooming, fragrant pink flowers; both leaves and flowers are small.

Meyer or dwarf Korean lilac (S. meyeri): seldom grows more then 4' tall and has fragrant pale-pink flowers.
