Lettuce
(Lactuca sativa)
Use yellow-green, red, burgundy and combinations to fill in
around other vegetables. Grow them in closely spaced rows,
about 4" apart. By planting every two weeks or so, you
can cut alternating rows to 1" high bimonthly for a long
season of salad greens. Try 'Red Sails', 'New Red Fire', 'Royal
Oak Leaf' and 'Four Seasons'. I like to
grow them in patterns.
Okra
(Abelmoschus esculentus)
A stunning ornamental plant, related to Hibiscus. Try
'Little Lucy', which has 3" yellow with purple flowers,
red-veined leaves and burgundy pods. The pods are tasty in
stir-fries and, of course, gumbo.
Peppers
(Capsicum annuum)
So many peppers, so little space. Try purple, white, chocolate,
lilac, orange, yellow and red varieties. Also wonderful are
the sweet yellow and scarlet 'Medusa' and 'Red Missile', or
the spicy hot 'Black Pearl', with its green-black foliage
and tiny deep-purple upright peppers.
Radishes
(Raphanus sativus)
These come in an Easter-egg mix of white, lilac, scarlet,
burgundy and pink.
