Shade Gardening

  Ferns (Athyrium)
Ensure you select appropriate varieties for your temperate zone. The Lady fern (A. filix-femina) is a favorite and, like most other varieties, is appreciated for its unique leaf structures. Most ferns like moist, rich soil conditions and shaded, sheltered sites.

Coleus (Solenostemon)
The only annual with multicolored leaves, it's one of the most beautiful plants and a welcome staple in any shade garden. Prefers moist soil and partial shade/sun.

Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida)
Crimson leaf perennial shrub that survives in partial shade. White, pink or red bracts surround greenish-yellow flowers.

Rhododendron
Colorful shrub that tolerates partial shade and prefers moist, acidic soil.

Ground Ivy (Glechoma hederacea)
One of the easiest ground covers to grow, it quickly becomes a green carpet in the garden. It's easily controlled and should be monitored to prevent it from choking out existing plants.

Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum)
Appreciates a part-shade location with rich, moist conditions. A good perennial border plant.

Solomon's Seal
Solomon's Seal is another shade-garden thriver.
