Shade Gardening

  Trillium
A pretty spring-flowering plant. Likes moist, acidic to neutral soil and tolerates deep shade.

Sweet Woodruff (Galium odoratum)
Prefers rich, well-drained soil. Grows delicate, white, spring flowers but needs to be controlled to prevent invasiveness.

Impatiens
Can grow in moist, partial shade and likes to be sheltered from the wind. The 'Tempo' and 'Super Elfin' series of annuals have a variety of flower colors.

Herbs
Many, such as parsley, chervil and most of the mint varieties, like partial-shade locations to prevent early bolting.

Lettuces
Most varieties of leaf lettuces and other leafy plants, such as chard, prosper under conditions similar to herbs.

Spotted Deadnettle (Lamium maculatum)
Can be invasive if not controlled, but provides a good evergreen-like ground cover. Likes moist, well-drained soil and any light condition. The nettle is referred to as dead, as it does not have stinging capabilities like the Stinging Nettle.

Toad Lily (Tricyrtis ohsumiensis)
It has light-green foliage and creamy flowers with purple tips. Likes part to full shade and rich, moist, well-drained soil.

Shade locations in the garden need not only be an area to set up hammocks or secluded sitting areas. Experimenting with a number of shade-tolerant plants will reward you with a wonderful garden that's made in the shade.
  Canadian Tulip Festival
This lettuce was garden grown in semi-shade, which helps extend the crop by preventing early heat induced bolting.
