Nature Printing by Foilography

Foil taped to Plexiglas

The foil is taped to the back of the Plexiglas.

Carefully flip the plate over so that the foil side is now facing upwards and the Plexiglas is against a flat working surface about waist high. Cover with a couple layers of felt. Lean as much of your body weight as you can onto the handles of the rolling pin and run it over the felt-covered sandwich several times in various directions. The first pass should go from one of the open ends of the foil toward the other. The second pass should be in the reverse direction. Then run the rolling pin from side to side and along the diagonals. Remove the felt and, providing you have used enough pressure, your plate should show a good amount of leaf detail.

To remove any wrinkles in the foil that may have formed, carefully but firmly rub lengthwise along each wrinkle using a cotton swab or the back of a fingernail. To complete the plate, fold the two open ends of the foil tightly around the Plexiglas and tape in place.

Some folks find the foil image so fascinating they simply mount and frame it. That's fine as long as the plant material is dry enough that it won't become moldy. However, I developed this process for the purpose of making multiple prints using the same piece of foil.
