The Best Way to Plant Roses

When to Plant
Bare-root roses are dormant and are best planted in early spring
or late fall. Potted roses are actively growing and can be planted
almost any time the soil can be worked.
Space
Place climbers at least 2' (60cm) away from any wall or fence. Most
hardy roses are big growers; when planting several together,
provide each with plenty of room. The size of the mature plant
is outlined on the plant's tag.
Hole Size
The queen of flowers deserves a 2' (60cm) diameter hole. Plant so that the roots are 2" (5cm) below
your normal soil level. This extra layer of protection keeps
rose roots alive during harsh winter conditions.
Loosen the soil at the bottom and sides of the hole so the roots
can spread easily. If you can't dig down, go up by making a
2' (60cm) raised bed. Remember that raised beds dry out faster,
so use 1" to 3" (2.5cm to 7.6cm) of mulch to reduce
moisture loss.
