Historically, bowls were made of lignum vitae because of its weight
and durability, but now it is more common for them to be made
of plastic. Shown here is a set of four 5-1/8" lignum vitae
bowls, made by R.G. Lawrie Ltd. of Glasgow, Scotland, and approved
by the SBA. Lawrie set up shop in 1881 and used machinery to
improve the manufacturing and testing of bowls. He was one of
the primary bowls producers of his time. These bowls bear the
initials A.M.S. and are numbered 1 to 4.
A
fifth bowl is from another set. It bears the mark of a different,
unknown manufacturer. A plug has been cut from this bowl, probably
to add weight to the ball and set the bias. |
