The
game of bowls has been played since at least the 13th century.
Standardized modern rules came into effect in 1892, with the
creation of the Scottish Bowling Association (SBA).
Bowls is similar to games such as bocce and boules; players
curl unevenly weighted or asymmetrical balls at a smaller ball
called the jack. Each bowl is meant to roll along a curved path,
depending on the bias of that bowl. Each is marked to show the
direction of the biasthe standard way to do this is to
have a large and a small symbol on either side of the bowl,
with the smaller symbol marking the direction of the roll.
