Guidance from a Master

Lessons Learned
There's more to being a successful furniture maker than simply a talent for handwork and a strong work ethic. Here are some valuable lessons I learned from Michael.

Design Is Key
High-end furniture is all about design. Given the right tools, materials and adequate instruction, anyone with the inclination to build a piece of furniture can do so. Aside from the size of Michael's shop, it looked very much like that of any woodworker—he used the same tools and materials to which we all have access. It's his unique designs and creative building process that separate him from the rest. Designing furniture with your own indelible mark is imperative.

Look for Practical Solutions
Like all great inventors, Michael's best solutions to everyday shop and production problems favored simplicity. To make disposable flat sanding blocks, he created a jig used to quickly glue sandpaper to uniform pieces of scrap sheet goods. He attached a roller-outfeed stand to the back of each bandsaw for reliable, firm support, and a foot switch on the drill press enabled him to safely use both hands to hold the work. He created a modified shoulder plane with a razor-blade nicker to quickly and accurately cut veneer, and added a mirror to his horizontal mortiser to help him see where the cutter was making contact with the wood. These were just a few tips I picked up on my first day.
