Grab Skippers

Grab skipper / raft axe

These tools, which log drivers used on log rafts, had a regular axe head on one end and a blunt tapered pick on the other, called the grab skipper. It was used for removing the grab dogs that had been driven into the logs.

Grab skipper / flat poll driver

Some grab skippers had a flat poll on one end, similar to that of a single-bit axe. The poll was used for driving or tightening grabs and log dogs.

Grab maul and skipper

Grab mauls were used for driving log dogs and grabs, as well as for sledging. The opposite end, or the skipper, was used for extracting grabs and dogs. The handles of these tools were sometimes like pick handles, oval in cross section.
