Log Dogs

Log dogs


Blacksmith-forged log dogs, or grabs, had links for attaching chains or cables. Note the mushroomed corner in the diagram below, which is a result of repeated pounding with a grab maul.

Commercially forged log dogs or grabs had broadened heel areas to increase the contact area for pounding with a maul. Sizes and shapes varied according to the manufacturer.
