Using Plow Planes

On larger rebates, the plow really comes into its own. Rather than inefficiently planing away the whole area shaving by shaving, two narrow grooves can be planed to define the shoulder and floor of the rebate. The waste comes away in one piece, possibly to be used elsewhere on the project.

Cutting a large rebate.

Insert a narrow cutter in the plow to do definition and preliminary shaping work on large moldings, leaving less to be done using profile planes. Given that curved profiles are more difficult to sharpen, that soon makes a lot of sense.
