Sheet Goods: Putting Them In Their Place

Diagram
Raised platform diagram.

The real magic behind this storage rack design is a support on the ceiling joist that's positioned slightly ahead of the front of the platform. It gives me the ability to flip the sheets forward and pluck a sheet of plywood from anywhere in the pile. When the front sheet is tipped forward to access sheets further back in the rack, the long arms of the ceiling support hang down enough to catch the top 5" of the first sheet on the platform. The two ceiling supports, made of 2" x 2" hardwood pieces, are the same depth as the ceiling joist and sit on either side of it. Each support has a longer middle arm that is tightly held between two sidepieces, giving the middle arm its strength. Each ceiling support is mounted on a thin piece of plywood to ease the support's construction. Partial sheets can be stored in the pile, but a full sheet must always be at the front of the platform to engage the ceiling support when sorting through the pile.
