A Practical Alternative to Making Drawers Using Hand Tools

Establishing the width of the dado   Cutting inside of the scribe lines
Scribing the lines to establish the width of the dado on the inside of the drawer's front face piece.
Using a chisel to make a thin cut inside of the scribe lines.

Fasten the board securely to your bench top and adjust your router plane to take a fine cut—the thinner, the better—to establish the dado. I clean out the groove as I go, using a chisel after every other pass with the router plane to carefully remove the waste and to ensure that the walls are smooth and vertical. Remember to take light passes and increase your depth gradually; do not cut down past your scribe lines. When you reach the desired depth, clean up the sides of the dado.
