Dear Lee Valley,
Many years ago, I purchased the plans for the Adirondack chair
and built several for our backyard. After seeing a similar
chair (although nowhere near as comfortable) in a store that
used hockey sticks for part of it, I decided to see what I
could do.
My son canvassed several hockey arenas and collected broken
sticks (part of my quest to recycle a national resource).
Unfortunately, many players have switched to composite sticks
(I guess it's their part of the preservation plan), so collecting
the 20 to 30 wooden sticks required for each chair was a lengthy
process. The cedar came from a relative's deck that had been
torn out and thrown against a fence and sat collecting bugs
and dirt for the past 15 months.
I
made this chair for the former deck owner who's much taller
than I am, so a few adjustments had to be made to my templates,
which were for a smaller chair. Luckily, I kept my original
plans from many years ago (part of my pack-rat tendencies that
my wife hates), and the full-sized cutout patterns were still
there.
I
have three more of these chairs in the works (all gifts),
but have a stick shortage at this time.
Hopefully, some of your staff are hockey fans and can appreciate
how the season can be extended through the summer.
Keep making my favorite store better. (It could be better
if it was just down the street instead of 40 minutes away—ha
ha!)
