Record Skew Rabbet Plane

The plane shown has the designation "REGD. DESIGN Nº 807853". In England, a registered design is observed for a limited time period; in this case, it ceased to be valid in 1950. The earliest models had the design number cast into the body directly behind the cutter. Latter models were marked on the sole edge, as is the case with this example, and some planes with no designation have been found. Various shades of blue were used in the manufacture of this plane throughout the years.

Most woodworkers have experienced the change in the cutting action of a plane or spokeshave caused by a slight angling (skewing) of the cutter. This effectively lowers the cutting angle of the blade, allowing for a finer or easier cut.
