| The
larger of the two axes shown is probably a commercially
manufactured axe, the indication being an illegible name
stamp just below the large center section, which shows
a cross surrounded by garlands. This is a Christian sign
and is frequently found on broadaxes (breitbeil). The sign is flanked with the maker's stamp, composed
of what appears to be two keys in a circle with a crown
placed over the circle. The whole area is decorated with
six spoke stamps, which make the sign for the sun or life.
The decoration at the bottom of the axe is the tree of
life, which has five branches and a blossom. |
