Handle
Choice
Designing the handle is a virtually mechanical process. We
pulled a few dozen antique saws from the Lee Valley tool collection
and had several people evaluate each for feel and balance.
Once we'd agreed on the first choice, it was mapped and modeled
on our CAD system. This allowed us to make very small changes
in scale, increasing or decreasing key dimensions, so we could
bracket the optimal design. Next step: attaching it to the
saw.
Handle Interface
We had already determined, during the design of the spine,
that we would attach the handle directly, bypassing the usual
method of fitting the handle to both spine and blade. An orienting
boss and stainless steel handle-mounting rod were added to
the base of the spine, and the design was finished.

Finished
Product
The above is just a thumbnail sketch of some of the stages involved
in the design of the Veritas® Dovetail saw. The entire process
occurred over a period of years and involved dozens of models;
some for fit and grip, some for balance and others for function.
The finished product looks deceptively simple, yet is an amalgam
of tradition, technology and performance.
