How to Use Cut Nails

Nail set
This shopmade nail set works well with cut nails. The rectangular tip is less likely to slip off the nail's head.

For those cut nails that are designed to be set below the surface of the wood, the proper nail set is helpful. Typical modern nail-set tools have a round tip for setting wire nails. This shape slips easily off the head of a cut nail, marring your work. Years ago I made a nail set based on an historic model that had a rectangular tip, and the difference was significant. You can make one easily using a cheap metal punch, shaping the tip with a file or a belt sander.

Though cut nails might seem an anachronism, they are a furniture-maker's friend. Whenever you need historical accuracy or extra holding power, the cut nail is worth the little extra effort and expense.
