The
instructions quoted below were always inserted into the body
behind the working part of the device:
| The
outer scale on the brass plate indicates degrees of a
circle. When used as a common Plumb and Level set the
bevel edge of the vial case at 90 degrees. The inner scale
graduates to inches, or fractions of an inch per foot.
To set the level for any required angle or slope move
the vial case to point on the index plate indicating the
required angle or slope. Then raise the level until the
bubble reaches the centre of the tube. Always be particular
to fasten securely the thumbscrew. |

The
actual patent date is April 21, 1863 with the patent being
#38,252. This particular patent was issued to Frederick A.
Traut, who along with his son Justus became an employee of
Stanley with the merger of the Hall and Knapp Company in 1857.
Three generations of the Traut family served the Stanley conglomerate,
with Justus being responsible for, among others, the patents
for the #45, 46, 47 and 55 combination planes along with over
20 patents for levels. Justus Traut's last recorded patent
for a level was done in conjunction with his son Frank L.Traut
in 1908.
