Next is the top section of the upper case, which I refer to
as the flower box. Above the glass door in the upper case, I
wanted to create an edge similar to the side boards. Therefore,
I stepped the flower box front boards back 1/2", which
enabled the horizontal (bottom of the flower box) board's edge
to be slightly rounded. This bottom board is also 3/4"
narrower than the top section of the side boards, so that the
back panel will slide down from the top in the side board's 1/4"
grooves.

#3: Flower Box / Side
|
The
bottom board is grooved to receive the tongues of the flower
box's front and back boards and is joined to the side boards
with two blind-wedged mortise-and-tenon joints and a miter
at its front edge. [See drawing detail #3.] The front
board joins the side board by a mitered edge and three 1/4"
blind-wedged mortise-and-tenon joints. The flower box's back
board is about 2-1/2" wide and is joined to the side board
by a single blind-wedged tenon. I also made a crosspiece 5/16"
x 2", located midway in the back of the upper case. This
holds the side boards from warping and the back panel from
buckling.
Next I was ready to work on the lower case. It has the same
width as the upper case, but it is 1" deeper. The top
part of the lower case has two narrow horizontal pieces, front
and back. [See drawing detail #4.] Both are even with
the lower side board's top edge. The back piece is inset 3/4"
for the back panel and the front piece is flush with the front
of the cabinet's frame. The two pieces are joined to the side
boards with a single blind-wedged mortise-and-tenon joint;
the front piece corner is mitered. Below the two narrow horizontal
pieces is another horizontal board, a dust board, which meets
the side board with three blind-wedged mortise-and-tenon joints.
Its front corner is double mitered and its back is also inset
3/4". These pieces create the drawer opening. In the
middle of the space, there is a full-depth partition, its
top edge flush with the tops of the horizontal strips. [See
drawing detail #5.] The front top and bottom corners are
double mitered, its top has two blind-wedged mortise-and-tenon
joints and its bottom has two as well.
