The group below includes socket-type chisels that show this manufacturer's method for making and joining the socket to the body of the blank. The inclusion of the gouge at the third step of this group demonstrates that a gouge or firmer chisel can be an option for the forge person. In both cases, the board shows only the rough and partially completed steps in forging and grinding a square sided firmer chisel or gouge. Any final polishing and sharpening would have been done in another area. Handles would only be fitted once an order was confirmed for shipment.

Socket-type chisel progression

These chisels all bear the distinctive stamp of Buck Brothers, an American edge-tool manufacturer that has existed for well over 100 years. Formed by three brothers who learned the tool-making craft in Sheffield, England, the company remained in the family's hands until approximately 1950. The branding is still used today by the holder of the distinctive trademark.
