Surfacing plane

The plane shown is an early model, as evidenced by the hand-stamped address on the top, the type of handle receiver and the external bolts for the adjustable depth fence. Later models sometimes had internal bolts for this fence and no handle receiver. They may have been licensed for production, allowing for other markings. This plane is especially heavy, weighing 9 lbs. It has the mass and length to perform its intended work; however, the proper setting of the two irons is important to allow for a controlled cut as one progresses across a surface. The triangular insert for holding the blades is important, as it distributes the clamping force equally on both cutters.
