The plate B is a thin steel plate having at one end the straight scraping edge b1 and at the other end the curved edge b2. The plate also has the slot b3, having at its opposite ends a width equal to the shank of the screw b4 and in the center of an enlarged opening, through which the head of the screw b4 may be passed. The plate C, which is slightly tapering and of wedge-shaped section, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 5, is provided with the central slot c1, the lower end of which is enlarged, so that the head of the screw b4 can readily pass through, the other portion of the slot c1 being of the width sufficient for the passage of the shank of the screw b4. The upper end of the plate B is provided with the handhold c2, of convex form, adapted to fit the ball of the hand.

In the assembling the parts the screw b4 is secured in the beveled end of the bar A. The plate B is placed over the head of the screw b4 and adjusted to bring the contracted portion of the slot b3 to bear on the shank of the screw, the pins a2 entering the lower contracted portion of the slot b3. The holding plate C is placed over the head of the screw b4 and pushed down to wedge the same between the head of the screw b4 and the plate B, and by so doing holds it firmly against the beveled end a1 of the bar A, the screw b4 and the pins a2 holding the plate B against the side movement.

In case the handle a of the bar A is grasped by one hand and ball of the other hand is pressed on the handhold c2. Usually the curved edge b2 is used first to rough-scrape, and then the plate B is reversed, so as to finish with the straight edge b1. When used on floors, the operative by slightly stooping can draw the scraper over the floor and readily scrape the same. The spring of the steel plate B materially facilitates the operation.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent—
  1. In a tool of the nature herein described, the combination with a bar having at one end the handle a and at the other end the beveled end a1, of a screw b4, the slotted steel-spring plate B, the curved edge b2 and the straight edge b1 at the opposite ends of the plate, the holding-plate C of wedge-shaped section and the handhold c2 at one end of the plate, as described.

  2. In a scraping-tool, the combination with the bar A having the handle a at one end and the beveled end a1 at the opposite end, of the slotted, spring-steel plate B, the pins a2 on the beveled end of the bar A, the holding-plate C, the handhold c2 on the same screw b4; whereby the spring of the steel scraper is increased, as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
